US
Customs and Port Security Measures
PNITA
has hosted a series of programs this fall to keep our members up to-date
on the various legislative and regulatory changes that have taken place
since the September 11 terrorist attacks. We encourage all of our members
to "bookmark" the US Customs Services website at www.customs.ustreas.gov
to learn about changes as they happen.
Columbia
River Channel Deepening Project
Senator
Wyden at PNITAs January Members Luncheon challenged PNITA and others
in the business community to play a pro-active role in supporting the Columbia
Riverr Channel Deepening Project, including sitting down with those who
may not always agree with our position. PNITA has pledged its support to
work with all interested parties to that end. On Feb. 5 PNITA participated
in the Columbia River Channel Deepening Day at the State Capitol in Olympia
to urge congressional and state officials to support funding of the project.

International
Trade Commission- Review of States International Trade Programs
The
Oregon International Trade Commission is examining the State's efforts
to promote international trade, and making recommendations on ways to make
those efforts more efficient and focused. The Commission is concentrating
its efforts in five areas: Agriculture, Inward Investment, Manufacturing,
Services, and Transportation and Infrastructure.
PNITA
and several of its members have been engaged in these consultations to
discuss the needs of Oregon businesses to compete in the global marketplace.
The Commission will finalize its findings in a report to be sent to Governor
Kitzhaber by March 2002. Once made public, we will post on our website. |

2001 Update
Year-End
Accomplishments
Trade
Promotion Authority- On Dec 6,
the House approved by a single vote, trade promotion authority(TPA) for
the President. Only 21 Democrats joined the 194 Republicans in voting
in favor of the bill.
New
Global Trade Round The
140 members of the World Trade Organization voted to launch a new round
of global trade negotiations.
China
and Taiwan WTO Accessions: China is expected
to join by mid-December; Taiwan by January 1, 2002. The Administration
has also set up an interagency working group to oversee Chinas efforts
to comply with its new WTO commitments. The US Department of Commerce will
also have 4 compliance officers based in China to work with US companies
on any issues that arise.
Bilateral
Trade Agreement with Vietnam: The US and
Vietnam ratified the agreement which took effect on November 28 after the
Vietnam National Assembly voted 278-85 to approve the agreement. The US
Congress ratified it in October. Vietnam has agreed to strengthen its IPR
laws and enforcement efforts, along with a reductions in tariff and non-tariff
barriers.
Singapore
Free Trade Agreement: Five rounds of negotiations
have been completed with the next round scheduled for late January, 2002.
The agreement could open up new service sector opportunities for US companies.
